maleborgia: (the Catalans are in command)
I'm looking at constructions of memory and history for school and one of the semi-tangental things this is leading to is a neat little collection of historical ironies from Spanish sources about Cesare's life/death. These are all factually true, as far as I can tell, which is... actually kind of funny after a while.

If people know about Cesare, they probably know about his father, Rodrigo Borgia, eventual Pope Alexander VI. He gets just as bad a rap in history as Cesare does, both fairly and unfairly. Canon does delve into Cesare's family a bit, with most of the attention going to Lucrezia and Rodrigo. They both have short chapters focusing on them, and Rodrigo is occasionally mentioned to or by Cesare as well. I have some time right now so I'm just going to quickly point out what Cesare's relationship with his father is and how it compares to other trains of thought on it.

The Prince

maleborgia: (Am I a Machiavel?)
Niccoló Machiavelli appears in canon (although he sadly does not have enough appearances yet to be appable) as a student at the same university Cesare is attending (and he did actually go there during those years, although probably not in the role the manga gives him, haha) and was sent as a diplomat to Cesare's military campaigns in the early 1500's. Cesare had a great influence on the development of his thoughts on political theory and science and he praised him in The Prince, the text for which he is now (in)famous. Machiavelli is shown to be already watching him with interest in canon and Cesare already displays signs of becoming that brilliant if idealized leader.

maleborgia: (looking for my Rubicon)
Although I did go into the series with preconceived notions about who Cesare was, I am very aware of how I am playing a particular character and not the image I have of the historical person. To make it easier for myself, I've been focusing on the fact that Cesare in this series is still sixteen, whereas most of the information I have been gathering on his life is from after he turned twenty-four. They're not the same person! There are strong similarities (otherwise I wouldn't have been able to app him), but there are also distinct differences in temperament and belief.

I took the Dante's Inferno Test for both of them and posted their results below. It actually sums up things pretty nicely and helped me get my thoughts together to explain it better. The first set of results are based off of the Cesare in camp. The second set is based off of what I know of the historical Cesare as an adult.

Family

Cesare has a complicated relationship with his family which I think is worth explaining more fully. On the one hand he has not lived with his parents or siblings since he was seven and there was some serious drama between them. On the other hand, the Borgia family sees itself as an island surrounded by clans that are untrustworthy at best and blatantly antagonistic at worst. This lends itself to some interesting family dynamics...
